In your search for work from home ideas, have you wondered how you could make money online selling products? Well, you could spend your time creating and selling physical products, but in my opinion, there are many more benefits to selling digital items. So, today I’m going to discuss something I have a lot of experience with… how to make money online selling ebooks.
What Is An Ebook?
An ebook is just like any other book or manual, only it is not printed on paper. It is in the digital form and can be downloaded onto any device – computer, tablet, smart phone, or e-reader.
Ebooks are great because you don’t need to go to the local Barnes & Noble. You can just go online, buy, and instantly download it.
You can find both free ebooks, and those that cost money. More and more bloggers are giving away free ebooks these days where they share their knowledge with their readers.
It’s also becoming much more common to be able to make money online selling ebooks, because readers really love their convenience and portability.
I sell several of my own ebooks on my website. Here are just a few examples for you.
Selling Products Online
There are so many ways that you can sell products online to make money.
If you’re a gifted crafter, you can sell your cute stuff online. You can use websites such as Etsy, Ebay, Facebook selling groups, or even sell stuff on a website that you create yourself. However, in my opinion, these are all a lot more time consuming than the way I make money online selling ebooks.
You’ve probably heard of Etsy, right? It’s where talented people can set up their own sales page for free, and for a very small fee (we’re talking like 20 cents) you can sell everything from homemade soaps, to personalized pillows, to a dress for your chicken to wear!
A few pros of selling products on Etsy are that it is a well-known website with a trusted name. Etsy gets millions of visitors and a lot of traffic that can potentially purchase your products.
The main con, in my opinion, of selling on Etsy is that you have to spend a lot of time creating a physical product. Then you have to hope that you’ll get some traffic from that one person who wants to buy that specific item. If they do buy it, you then need to package the item, buy postage, and physically ship the item.
You’re going to hear me say this over and over on my blog, but selling digital items rather than physical items is how you will be able to work smarter, not harder. And this is why I love to make money online selling ebooks. Do I have to pack and ship anything? No! It’s a way to make residual income IN MY SLEEP!
Don’t we all want to make money while we’re playing? Yep.
Like Etsy, Ebay is a way that you can sell physical, tangible products to consumers online. On Ebay, customers can have a “Buy It Now” option, where they can buy the product immediately for a set price. Or, they can place a bid in an online auction and compete against other bidders for a product.
Again, though, selling on Ebay requires you to list the item, hope it sells, package the item, buy the postage, and then go ship it. I love the sale, but I hate packaging and shipping! I would rather have a website where I can just make money online selling ebooks, and take the easier route! (Remember – work smarter, not harder)! 🙂
A big way people have started selling their physical “stuff” in recent years is with Facebook buy and sell groups.
These are nice because it’s free, and you’re typically selling within a local network, and your buyer picks up the items from you. This eliminates the need to pack and ship, but adds another hassle of having to invite a stranger into your home, or meet them at another location. HASSLE!
How Do You Sell Products Online
As mentioned above, there are a lot of ways to sell products online.
In addition to the above methods, you can sell products through Amazon. This is another topic for another day, and I could write an entire book on how to do this.
But, basically, you apply to be a vendor on Amazon. You choose what products to sell, and you choose three methods of storage and shipment.
First, you can store products in your own warehouse, or even your basement or garage. Packaging and shipping is entirely your responsibility.
Second, you can, for a fee, procure products from a wholesaler and store those products in an area of Amazon’s own warehouse. They handle packaging, postage, and shipping all themselves for you, directly at Amazon.
The upside of this is convenience. You never have to be bothered with the actual dirty work. The downside is that they charge a hefty fee for these services. You don’t want your profits eaten up with fees, but it can happen pretty quickly.
Third, you can develop a relationship directly with a product manufacturer, and they can drop ship items for you, directly from them to your customers. This is convenient, but it does typically cost a fee, and you are usually required to buy in massive bulk quantities.
Now, are you seeing why I prefer to deal with digital products rather than physical ones? I love the ease of making money online selling ebooks, in particular, because it is passive income without all the hassles listed above.
Selling Physical vs Digital Products
As mentioned previously, you can sell real, physical, tangible products, or you can sell digital products.
Digital products are different. An example may be clip art, a company logo you create for someone, a song, a printable piece of art, a custom wedding invitation, or an ebook.
You don’t have to dedicate physical storage space to house digital products, other than a few kilobytes on your computer’s hard drive. You don’t have to buy postage or drive to the post office to ship them, either.
Your customer buys the item online, and can download it right to their computer or smart phone. It is easy, convenient, and hassle free.
How Do I Make Money Selling An Ebook?
- Write one.In your unique brain, you currently carry information that no one else in the world has. Maybe it’s a crazy but true experience you went through, maybe it’s the 50 amazing recipes that your grandma handed down to you, maybe it’s the secret to making money online.Whatever it may be, you can write an ebook about it, and sell it! Chances are, there’s someone out there who can benefit from that information.
- Promote others’ work.Remember Amazon? You can promote other writers’ ebooks that are for sale on Amazon. Add your Amazon Associates affiliate link, and you will get a commission for each sale! This link is an Amazon affiliate link to an ebook. It’s pretty simple to make money online selling ebooks without ever even writing a book, just by promoting other people’s books using your affiliate links.
This ad below is another link to an Amazon ebook. If you purchase the ebook through Amazon, I make a profit off of it (at no cost to the buyer).
- Purchase ebooks with resell rights and sell them.
There are places you can go online to purchase ebooks that have resell rights. I have personally never done this, because I write my own content, but it is yet another way you can make money online selling ebooks.
A quick google search of “buy ebooks with resell rights,” will send you down the road of exploring this method.
The Bottom Line Is…
There are a lot of ways to profit from an online business, but as always, I prefer to work smarter, not harder. (I really love that saying)!
When it comes to selling products online, I found that selling, packaging, and shipping items took so much of my time and made me grumpy.
When I started to make money online selling ebooks, I can tell you that I was a much happier wife and mom! Now, I smile every time my phone beeps with an alert that I just made another ebook sale.
Even though I do make money online selling ebooks, that is just a small portion of how I now make a steady monthly income from home. Other ways I make money online from home are through Amazon Associates (Amazon’s affiliate program, which I mentioned above), Google AdSense Ads, other ad companies like Share-A-Sale and Impact Radius, sponsored blog posts and product endorsements, training and workshops, affiliate marketing, and the Wealthy Affiliate program.
Just a quick little blurb that I should mention about Wealthy Affiliate, because you may not have heard of it…
I have been blogging for 5 years now. My first several years were when I worked very hard, but made almost no money. I almost hate to even talk about that time in my blogging career, because it makes me so mad.
I felt like I was literally busting my ass to make a name for myself and to succeed. I was even featured in Woman’s Day Magazine, which was awesome! But, at that time, I was still making very little money, because I never took any training, any classes, and I was making A LOT of career-killing mistakes.
I knew some other bloggers who took some training, like the class from Ruth Soukup, but at nearly $1,000 and about 6-12 months to complete, I could not afford that. That’s a lot of money, and a huge time investment.
Another blogging friend suggested Wealthy Affiliate to me. It offers the most amazing training I have ever seen anywhere, live help, and the best and easiest to use keyword tool I’ve ever found (which you NEED if you’re going to right the right kind of blog posts that get traffic).
I roll my eyes at things a lot, and it took me six months to even check it out. But, when I did, I saw “hey…there’s actually something to this”. I started my free account, and used my free trial to pick the brains of some of the most successful online entrepreneurs in the biz, and took ALL the free training.
And then…something magical happened. For the first time, I actually “GOT IT”! Within two weeks, my traffic increased, AND I had THE BEST month in Amazon sales that I had EVER had.
And that was all from learning about two of the secrets I learned in Wealthy Affiliate.
I could probably write another 10 pages about how Wealthy Affiliate has changed my online career, but I am already at about five pages here, and my coffee is getting cold (lol).
